Using Google Maps to Measure Your Fence

Using Google Maps to Measure Your Fence

Installing an electric fence can be a daunting project, especially if you're doing it for the first time. One crucial step is accurately measuring the distance where the fence will be installed to determine the amount of materials needed. Thankfully, Google Maps offers a handy tool for measuring distances, which can be extremely useful for this purpose. Here’s how to use Google Maps to measure the length of your electric fence and estimate the required posts and conductors.

Step-by-Step Guide to Measure Distance Using Google Maps

  1. Open Google Maps

Start by visiting Google Maps and find the location where your fence will be located.

  1. Select Your Starting Point

Right-click on your starting point on the map where you plan to install one end of the electric fence. From the menu that appears, select "Measure distance."

  1. Map Out Your Fence Line

Click anywhere on the map to create a path you intend your fence to follow. To add another point, continue clicking on the map. Google Maps will show you the total distance as you map out your fence line. This total is dynamically updated with each point added.

  1. Adjusting Your Path

If you need to adjust the positioning of a point, simply click and drag it to the correct location. To remove a point, click on it again.

  1. Complete Your Measurement

Once you have finished plotting the perimeter of your fence, Google Maps will display the total distance in both miles (mi) and kilometers (km) at the bottom of the screen. When done, you can click 'Close' to exit the measurement tool.

Calculating Fence Materials

Now that you have the total length of your planned electric fence, you can calculate the amount of materials needed:

  • Conductor (Tape, Rope or Wire): Multiply the total length measured by the number of strands you want your fence to have, plus a little extra for any setup requirements or adjustments.
  • Fence Posts: Typically, electric fence posts are placed 5 metres apart. Divide the total length of your fence by the spacing you choose to find out how many posts you'll need.
  • Additional Materials: To complete your setup, you will also need an energiser, insulators, earthing rods, and other materials. Check out our Info & Advice centre for more guidance!

Google Maps is a powerful tool that goes beyond just giving directions. By using it to measure out your electric fence, you can save time and ensure that you purchase the right amount of materials without any wastage.
